Biohit Oyj environmental objectives

Biohit focuses on the following measures in its environmental targets:

  • Paper print volumes
  • Minimization of packaging material
  • Waste recovery
  • Substitution of problem chemicals
  • Minimization of production losses

Environmental goals are an important part of Biohit’s strategy. New aspects of more environmentally friendly activities are being sought all the time.

The objectives set have been achieved very well and in some cases even exceeded.

Use of paper

The aim is to get rid of paper printing completely and to achieve that goal we are constantly documenting more and more information electronically.

Objective and its realization:

The goal has been to reduce paper consumption by 10% per year. This has been achieved well. In 2019, paper consumption had decreased by as much as 22% from the previous year 2018. And, further paper use (printing and copying) was increased 18% in 2020 compared to the previous 2019.

Waste and its recovery

Waste recovery is monitored and has remained fairly stable over the past year.

Objective and its realization:

The goal is for the recoverable waste to account for at least 94% of the total waste. The share of waste to be recovered in 2019 was 92%, compared to 88% in the previous year 2018. The share of recoverable waste of the total waste produced was 99% in 2020. This was 5% over the set target.

The figures are affected by, for example, the Cleaning Measures for Chemical Stocks.

Hazardous waste

Biohit does not use a lot of problem chemicals, as efforts have been made to continuously reduce their use.

Objective and its realization:

The material used should be more than 94% recyclable. At present, the figure is already 92%. Until a few years ago, 88 percent of recyclable material was in use.

Production

The aim is to keep production waste to a minimum.

Objective and its realization:

Set target was not achieved. Scrapping-costs in 2020 were considerably over the set target (0€). However, they were only 69% of the scrapping costs of the previous 2019 so the trend is decreasing. Most of the scrapping costs were due to scrapping of raw and packaging materials.
